Effect of Small Water Dropwort Extract on Cellular Immune Response of Mice

Abstract
|
|
|
Several studies have shown that extracts from yellow-green vegatables antitumor activities. In the present study we investigated the effect of small water dropwort(Oenanthe javanica D.C., wild type) in order to elucidate the immunological
mechanism
of
antitumor activity of this substance. The results obtained from the experiment were as follows:
1. Small water dropwort extract showed cytotoxic effect on sarcoma 180 cells in vitro.
2. When small water dropwort extract was injected into the peritoneal cavity of mice transplanted with sarcoma 180 cells, the average survival time(19.8 days) tneded to be almost same as compared with the non-treated control(19.2 dyas).
3. When sarcoma 180 cells were injected subcutaneously into the right groin of mice, and then small water dropwort extract was injected into the peritoneal cavity, the tumor inhibition ratio was 44%.
4. The natural killer cell activity was significantly augmented by small water dropwort extract in vitro and in vivo. Similar augmentations of natural killer cell activity were obtained with culture supernatants of small water dropwort
extract-exposed
spleen cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
5. Small water dropwort extract on the macrophage from peritoneal cavity showed a higher effectiveness in vivo than in vitro.
These results indicate that small water dropwort extract shows the inhibitory effect for growth of sarcoma 180 cells in vitro, also it can augment macrophage and natural killer cell activities in vivo.
